Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), have been detected in abiotic Arctic matrices: surface sediments and seawater from coastal areas in the Kongsfjorden were collected and analyzed. Levels of PCBs varied depending on the sampling site. Total PCB concentrations were between 11.63 (site C2W) and 27.69 pg l-1 (site AW). These levels were comparable to those reported previously in lake sediments from the northern Svalbard. The occurrence and biodegradation potential of cold-adapted PCB-oxidizing bacteria in seawater and sediment along the fjord was also evaluated. Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Residues (PCB and DDT) in Human Liver, Adipose Tissue and Brain in Finland

In this work the concentration of chlorinated hydrocarbons (PCB and DDT) was analyzed from 73 autopsy samples. Half of the material came from the coastal area of the Gulf of Bothnia and the other half from Central Finland. The correlation of the concentration of the drug to age, sex and the locality was studied as well as the occupation of the dead subjects.

Polychlorinated diphenyl ethers, dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in finnish human tissues compared to environmental samples

Finnish human samples from the Helsinki area and Arctic cod samples from Vestertana Fjord (Norway) were analyzed for polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDE) and 2,3,7,8-chloro substituted dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and dibenzofurans (PCDF). The PCDE, PCDD and PCDF contents in human and animal samples from Finland and elsewhere were briefly reviewed. PCDEs were non-detectable in human liver and testis, but some PCDE congeners were identified in human adipose tissue and fat of boiled Arctic cod liver composite. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides are common environmental contaminants that have been associated with human health problems. OBJECTIVES: To assess serum concentrations of several organochlorine contaminants in general population living in a city with an ancient agricultural tradition and to identify possible exposure sources in Sicily. Objective - The existence of a peripheral neuropathy after exposure to polychlorinated dioxins (PCDD) is still discussed, as studies concerning dioxin effects on the peripheral nervous system are rare and contradictory. Material and methods - Clinical and neurophysiological examinations (motor conduction velocity of the peroneal nerve, sensory conduction velocities of the sural and ulnar nerves) were made in 156 dioxin exposed workers (42 with, 114 without cloracne) from one pesticide producing plant. Dietary exposure of the Valencia Region population to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and PCBs was assessed in the Region of Valencia in 2010–2011. A total of 7700 food samples were collected. Occurrence data were combined with consumption data to estimate dietary exposure in adults (&gt;15 years of age) and young people (6–15 years of age). The estimated intake was calculated by a probabilistic approach. Average intake levels (upper-bound scenario) were 1.58 and 2.76 pg toxic equivalent (TEQ) kg−1 body weight (bw) day−1 for adults and young people, respectively.
